TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) disorder, or TMD, is a common dental and medical condition. It is both painful and uncomfortable, and can affect how a person functions on a daily basis. Treatment for TMJ/TMD is typically multi-faceted, with both surgical and non-surgical treatments available. Non-surgical treatments of TMD typically focus on reducing inflammation, pain, and muscle spasms. These treatments may include braces, jaw exercises, or physical therapy. A custom-made dental appliance also may be prescribed to promote healing and may even serve to prevent the problem from recurring. Medication can also be prescribed to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and muscle spasms, or to improve joint function.
